Robyn is the mastermind behind “Brightest Bulb in the Box: Beauty for Critical Minds”. In addition to product reviews and the occasional tutorial, she also does other types of interesting posts that got me addicted to her blog.
How she reviews things is very consistent. Swatches of eyecolor are done the same way: two swies over bare skin. When testing lip products, she usually swipes a stripe on her hand to show the color, and feild tests it with her unofficially patented “4-hours-and-a-meal test”.
Price per Ounce
She pretty much always does a break down of how much a product costs per ounce. Fun fact: Anastasia’s brow wiz costs $7000 per ounce… That’s more than an once of gold AND platinum combined (~ $1,214 + $1,273).
Actual Value of Sets
Robyn also calculates and compiles price breakdowns and comparisons. Massive ones. I’m not going to lie. Most of the time I don’t read them all. I just skim for price breakdowns of sets/brands/collections that I’m interested in.
She does this for individual items, set, boxes and palettes.
Robyn also analyzes them with statistical methods, completing the whole shebang with box-charts and histograms. She also does standard deviations and ranks the products or sets from highest to lowest price per ounce.
One of my favorite things that she does is call out companies on false advertising in her “Beauty Bullshit” series. I am a sciency person at heart (makeup junkies have heads filled with stuff other than sparkles and fluff?!)
Mass Swatch Comparisons & Tests
If you like science and beauty with a pinch of cynicism & swearing, this is the blog for you.
Just try not to waste too much time.
